RYT 200 :: Vinyasa Flow, Yoga for Trauma & Y12SR

Jess Marie has been practicing yoga since the age of 12. She was first introduced to the practice by her grandfather & mother who helped support her during her anxiety attacks. Pranayama (breath work) & dhyāna (meditation) saved her life.

In early 2015, she became certified in Vinyasa Yoga Asana as a 200 RYT. Since then, she has dedicated time to her personal practice & always educating herself to further her teaching practice. She is Yoga for Trauma certified, focusing on stress & trauma relief through the practice of yoga. Jess also recently became certified in Y12SR, combining the somatic approach of yoga, and the cognitive approach of 12-step programs. Jess is apprenticing with Jill Van Bodhi in becoming a Qigong instructor.

Her great grandmother was a yoga asana teacher, & is with Jess always during her teaching & personal practice.

Jess' classes focus on the breath & tuning into what the body needs. She will guide you through breath & movement with ease & grace.

Jess embodies everything you can expect from a yoga teacher and leader: patience, mindfulness, and inspiration.

When I took Jess’ class it had been years since I had any type of yoga so I was slightly nervous. Her sweet, gentle energy instantly put me at ease as the class started. There were positions that were a little challenging but in a good way! Any time I seemed to be struggling, Jess helped me with my form which was super helpful. She had me putting my body in positions I didn’t even know I was capable of and I can’t wait to see what more sessions will bring!
— Mariya Billing
Jess’ yoga classes have been amazing for me, and her kind and thoughtful character really shine through in her practice. I am genuinely excited to show up because I am furthering my physical and spiritual goals each time.

yoga asana :: vinyasa flow

Vinyasa :: “movement linked with breath.” Postures are strung together in a short or longer flow. This style of yoga is often quite dynamic, which requires the mind to stay focused in the present to be able to keep up. Focusing keeps you from drifting off and helps you to be present in your body rather than stuck in your head. There will be a meditation for the first/last 5 minutes of this class.

benefits

  • Calming - the steady cycle of inhales and exhales provides you with a calming, mental focal point.

  • Purification of body - the continual movements, from one pose to another, gives you an added cardiovascular benefit creating internal heat. The increased circulation and sweat leads to purification of the body.

  • Increase muscle strength & flexibility - the routines, weather they are slow paced or fast paced are a great workout for your body.

  • Brings you to the present - yoga asana opens you up to this moment, which is all there is and which is the doorway to experience truth and real happiness.

yoga for trauma

Anxiety, depression, behavioral issues, relationship stress, and health issues are often the result of unresolved trauma. The goal of a trauma informed yoga practice is to build resiliency and establish greater self-regulation. It is about feeling safe and at home in our bodies so that we can feel stable, have good self-esteem, and healthy relationships. A trauma informed yoga practice is sensitive to the needs of a participant with trauma symptoms, and offers them tools to feel safe, empowered and self-regulated

benefits

  • Stillness - it's not a regular part of the average person’s life. When we step onto the yoga mat and move and breath consciously, we can get in touch with emotions or sensations that are uncomfortable and that we’ve managed to avoid.

  • Self care - helps to regulate rituals, positive mindset & kindfulness towards the self

y12sr :: yoga for 12-step recovery

Combining the somatic approach of yoga, and the cognitive approach of 12-step programs.

Yoga for 12-Step Recovery is a holistic model designed to address the physical, mental & spiritual disease of addiction.

The characteristics and effects of addiction could easily be described as separation. Addictive behaviors disconnect us from ourselves, our loved ones, our environment and so much more.

Conversely, yoga itself means union, integration, balance. Yoga and its practices teach the fine art of balancing our multidimensional lives while living in a complex world.

Yoga of 12-Step Recovery was created as a holistic model to address the physical, mental and spiritual dis-ease of addiction. Informed by the latest research in neuroscience and trauma healing, Y12SR “connects the dots” by combining the somatic approach of yoga with the cognitive approach of the 12-step recovery model – the most well-known addiction recovery program in the world, with millions of active practitioners.

testimonials

"I'm a dancer, and part of my warm up is usually yoga. But it usually goes really fast so I don't get any feedback on it, and with Jess I was able to improve my form and try new poses. Jess is a great teacher and works with any level. I greatly recommend :)”

— VANESSA STEPHANIE

"I've always wanted to try yoga and never really felt comfortable doing it. As a former athlete I always felt like the stretching we did never really helped after suffering injury after injury playing multiple sports I've been left with many inflexible joints. Jess has made me feel more comfortable than I ever thought possible while doing yoga. She's a great teacher and I'll be going to see her as much as possible. It's a honor to be her student to be better myself with her help.”

— AUSTIN MALOTT

"I've always wanted to try yoga but could never really afford it, until Jess came along! She's really a great instructor. I'm not flexible at all and I can't hold my own wait for to long but she's so patient with me! And shows me different techniques that are a little easier for me. I also have slight back issues sometimes so she sends me home with stretches to do before bed and the morning. I've never went home and woke up with out being sore! Definitely getting a great workout without pushing my body to a breaking point! She's extremely great, talented and smart! I would definitely recommend some yoga sessions by her! ”
